Every Christmas we spend Christmas Eve with my mom (I have the worlds tiniest family) and then on Christmas Day we all go to my inlaws (including my mom because it would take a natural disaster to keep me away from her on a holiday!). Anyway, this year weve decided to do a Christmas Day Baked Potato Bar. I know its not the usual but were kinda not-usual like that. So...my mom is baking the potatoes and will keep them warm in her crock pot. Mr Hoe is making chili to put on them, or eat on the side. The rest of us are doing bacon pieces, cheese, sour cream, ham, just whatever we can think of. I think my Sis In Law (worlds most awesome chick) is doing a kind of pot roast topper or something. Anyway, the reason for this is that we want to play games. Because we dont have any kids in the immediate family, we draw names for gifts and that wont take long to do. And were always down for some board games! My mom-in-law is making a salad, and dessert will be trays of cookies that were all baking beforehand. It will be a casual, stress-free and fun Christmas Day and Im excited. After all, its not about stiff, formal, best manners...its about having fun and hanging out together. This way there wont be tons to cook for any one person, not a lot of clean-up, and we can get right down to the fun stuff. If youre feeling blah about the same old stressful, formal, Christmas....try suggesting this to your crew. Id be willing to bet more than one of them would be happy to try something new and put more focus on fun rather than a standing rib roast.
