Every Tallahassee cyclist needs to vote August - TopicsExpress

Every Tallahassee cyclist needs to vote August 26!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tallahassee has been trying to be more bicycle friendly and has moved up to Bronze level. If we don’t vote we could lose our current bike friendly reps and then could lose some of our bike trails and newly developing walkable and bikeable streets which has brought $$millions of investments downtown like college town, improving our local economy!!! VOTE!!!! The August 26 is a primary but is actually the final election for Miller/Stewart race. I called some of the candidates and looked up some “old” questionnaires from 2010. Below are listed some of the races still to decide… City Commission At Large Group 2: Nick Maddox incumbent: Was very knowledgeable about kids getting diabetes and is strong for getting people out exercising. (Nick Maddox Listed biking as very important on 2010 League of Womens Guide) Mayor: Andrew Gillum has been bike friendly Has many opponents but he is expected to win. City Commission seat 2: Diana Oropallo: Is a jogger but starting to feel her age (so I encouraged her to try biking). Her family is very active in rowing. She is very active in schools. She said she is very supportive of making Tallahassee more bikeable. Curtis Richardson: Has been state rep with environmentally friendly record. Promoted dental and medical services. I left a message on his phone and can update when I get more info. City Commission Seat 3: Nancy Miller: Used to own a bike shop. As commissioner she is a very big reason we have bike boxes, 3 feet bumper stickers on government cars, call street and FAMU way improvements. She is now working hard to make a St Marks trailhead near the Bicycle House. She was on the original blueprint 2000 citizens committee that got more parks and bike considerations. Steve Stewart: I called him and he is not against bike lanes but doesn’t feel biking should be promoted as a transportation alternative. It is a recreational activity and he said he was supportive of finishing Charles Billings bike path. He said his wife is a cyclist and his kids bike Tom Brown Park. He likes infill development but was surprised Southwood promoted itself as bike friendly and walk able yet few walk or bike there (marketing gimmick). Notices Bull Run has people biking to stores. Thinks the buses should go only so far “out” so that people who want to bus would be encouraged to move in to town closer. (Steve Stewart Aware of diabetes risk in obese kids but didnt fill out 2010 Questionnaire) School Board: (Forrest Van Camp was only one who didnt feel it was the schools job to promote healthy eating exercise 2010)
