Every activity with your dog can turn into a productive training session with just a little creativity. You can practice impulse control and obedience with distractions without even leaving your yard. MANY of us have dogs that generally enjoy car rides (well not necessarily the car ride, but going somewhere new and exciting). How does your dog act when you bring them toward the car? Are they crazy excited, jumping on you, whining, barking, pulling on the leash and/or launching themselves into the vehicle when you barely have the door open? Utilize this as a perfect training opportunity. If your dog messes up, just work them through it. It isnt the end of the world, worst case scenario they break command and jump in the car. Then you call them out and practice a few more times until they get it right. This will also help your dog calm down before a car ride because they wont be building up adrenaline to take into the car for the drive. Calm gets you things that you want :) ! Obedience is a gateway to creating calm, compliant responses from your dog.
