Every conversation Ive had about unfriendly, unhelpful, or un-Christ-like behavior in Mormonism has led to a discussion about Mormon doctrine vs. Mormon culture. We tend to make a strong distinction between the two in an attempt to vindicate doctrine and vilify those people (never ourselves) who misapply it. If doctrine doesnt shape behavior, then doctrine is failing. You can blame that failure on people all you want, but organized religion IS people. To everyone who is not a member of the church, Mormonism IS how Mormons treat others. No exceptions, no excuses.
