Every day in news papers /TV are reporting a lot of accidents/mishaps involving children, especially infants. So I feel it my duty to caution parents /future parents on certain safety aspects concerning their children 1. Place household furniture/appliances in safe place away from the reach of the child, especially the TV/other gadgets which have electrical cables connected to the switches. Child has a tendency to play with these cables and get rude /fatal shock. Another danger is that the appliance may also fall down if the child disturbs the cable. Recently one child died in Chennai when it played with the TV cable and the TV has fallen on it. 2. Do not place sharp objects like screw drivers/pen/pencil/scale/stick/knife/etc., within the reach of the child. A place for everything and everything in its place. 3. Teach child how to safely handle any object rather than discouraging them from reaching for it. 4. Instances of children falling fall from the balcony are on the increase, since there is no parapet wall or the wall height is low or there are gaps in the grills that will let the child peep in. saner thing is to install a safety grill with very minimum gaps at a reasonably high level. Our child is more precious than a few thousand rupees on these safety arrangements. Those residing in rented houses, do it yourself, if the owners refuse, after all it is your child. If not feasible, better move to safer house. This may sound odd, but I am convinced about the reason behind this. 5. While going to park, do not put the child on all types of play equipments without verifying their relative strength and safety. There may be open wells/pits/trenches on the road/public places. Be careful. Never the leave the child out of your reach/away from your vicinity. On the road 1. Always take the child on your left – platform/service lane side- (away from the vehicles). 2. You hold your child’s hand firmly with your hand. (It is not correct to allow your child to hold your hand, since it has a tendency to suddenly leave your hand and run away from you. 3. Do not talk over cell phones on the road. If you receive a call on your mobile, do not respond right away. Go to a safe place, hold your child firmly and then talk. Let your talk be brief. Otherwise the child will become restless. ( Better to avoid talking while on the road with child) 4. Don’t use head phones while going with the children. You will lose your attention. 5. While crossing the road, ensure that child’s hand is firmly held by you and you are going first and the child follows you closely. Do not drag the child too harsh; at the same time do not cross the road lazily. Keep your mobile/ mp3, etc., in your pockets/bag while crossing the road. 6. Wear helmet while driving, always. If possible, buy a suitable helmet for the kid, if you have to regularly take the child on two wheeler. 7. Do not seat the infants of less than 2 years on the pillion. While negotiating a curve or ride over a bump, the child may lose balance and fall on the ground and possibly hit by a vehicle coming behind your vehicle. Also the child may doze off posing risk. 8. Do not take more than one child on your vehicle/pillion. 9. Ladies, don’t take infants on your lap, while on pillion, that too when you are sitting on one side. I could not recollect all the aspects. I will send some more areas of vulnerability in my next mail. Life is precious RISK is BIG play safe!!!
