Every exercise science student I meet talks to me about their aspirations of working with elite athletes, which is great. Here is the sad reality... There are minimal jobs, high amount of candidates and most of the time it comes down to who you know not what you know. Just a thought.... In my opinion us as coaches can evoke greater change with the junior developing athletes than the athletes who have all ready made it to the top level. I am not saying that the strength coach at the elite level is not important, to the contrary they are vital to a successful career at the top level. (Preparation dictates performance) If exercise science students focused more on creating companies or developing training systems for the junior athlete (when their CNS is like putty, and we can yield strong adaptation in performance capacities) we would see stronger, quicker and injury resistant athletes that understood the importance of physical preparation for athletic performance (not just running themselves into the ground). Basic fundamental/primal motor patterns such as; Squats Deadlifts Push ups Rows Chins Oh press Split squat Bridging + core movements Need to be coached, programmed and structured in a way that maximises adaptation, progression but minimises overtraining. Its better to undertrain than overtrain for the junior athlete, WSSC takes the approach less is more... Think long term not short. The benefit the junior athlete can receive from developing basic strength, speed (through mechanics), power, agility, work capacity, flexibility/mobility and movement efficiency is large and will form a strong base level preparation needed for when the athlete becomes more specific with their training. Junior development is key towards better elite performance, lets start developing the neuromuscular profile of these athletes. Look out for my podcast on exercise science students and my advice for them wanting to become coaches. LIFT STRONG. CW & WSSC Info@woodfordssc or PM.
