Every few years we get the great opportunity of seeing David Fincher make some of the most compelling larger budget, mainstream films there are today. Anyone who knows me well will know how much I admire him and his work, but few seem to understand that it goes beyond the superficial reasoning of his films being stylish or moody. Hes a big reason as to why I chose to become a student of film. This video essay, by Tony Zhou, is a fantastic breakdown of why I think hes one of the greatest directors of his generation. His knowledge of the craft is immense and his understanding of film language and how to utilize it is something that all who study film, and I dont just mean academically, could take way from. For me, one of the big things Ive learned from his films is the power of the close up. Couldnt be more excited to see Gone Girl tonight.
