Every five years, in a tiny region of Nepal, as many as half a million animals are beheaded in an extraordinary mass sacrifice in the name of religion. This festival is called Gadhimai. ...The people carrying out this brutal sacrifice are farmers and factory workers, all hoping that this bloodshed will bring them prosperity from the Hindu goddess Gadhimai. The sights and sounds are unimaginable. Pools of blood, animals bellowing in pain and panic, wide-eyed children looking on, devotees covered in animal blood, and some people even drinking blood from the headless but still warm carcasses. ... ...The festival itself is already underway, with the sacrifices due to take place on the 28 and 29 November... This year Martyn Stewart and Nikki Botha are going to witness and document it. Having gotten to know Martyns work over the years through his efforts with the Taiji dolphin drive hunts, I know he will provide a real and thought provoking view as he speaks for the animals from a place of truth. I will be sharing some of his work, so I guess this is a warning of some brutal images you may see on my timeline and a request not to look away. Without people like Martyn these animals do not have a voice and things will never change. As you can see if you read the linked article efforts are being made to end this, but it takes courage and knowledge. theguardian/global-development-professionals-network/2014/nov/25/nepal-setting-out-to-challenge-the-worlds-largest-animal-sacrifice
