Every international process is so twisted against developing countries; my frustration makes me want to give up; it makes me want to throw in the towel and say; I am done but when I imagine what it was like growing up in the village, seeing innocent people struggle to make ends meet everyday, while the global community is far beyond fairness in its approach to development; a different silent voice tells me to go on and press on... so I decided to write a Poem about my work and its challenges; I travel far, and I travel wide I carry the weight of my country on my back I meet people and they smile at me And I remember the little boy on the street, with a smile of hope on his face I sit in a meeting, behind my countrys flag Different faces glide across my mind I see the name on my countrys flag And its the name that speaks of tribes and cultures I represent; From the highlands, to the lowlands, From the mountains, to the coasts The islands and the attolls I see your faces everyday, I see your smiles I feel your heart beats, resounding in my mind As I look at the flag infront of me The Industrial nations, the powerful nations, the wealthy nations Think that they want to help you But it seems they cannot understand you Because they dont know you And their assistance is far beyond help Because no one seems to understand you I tried to and I keep trying I want to give up and say, whats done is done I want to say, I cannot do this anymore I am tired, and I need to quit My back hurts, cause I dont rest I wake up at 4:00 am just to read Because I dont want to go in unprepared I raise my flag to tell them the truth The truth about your needs And they seem to listen, happens to listen But somewhere beneath those piercing eyes I search for truth, the truth to receive from my country But why do I have this feeling Why do I feel that what I say will not get far Far behind those dark eyes; and whirlpool of intelligence Why cant it brighten up like it does When you show interest in our forests, When you show interest in our tuna When you show interest gold, silver, copper and oil When you are now showing interest in our LNG But I am just a nobody I am just a young woman I am just somebodys daughter, sister and grand daughter I am just a public servant But I dont forget who I am I serve my purpose in this world The purpose that God created in me Before I was placed in my mothers womb Like Joshua, intend to break down walls Like Joseph, I accept humiliation Like Daniel, I have been to the pitts of Dungeons And like Solomon, I continue to pursue wisdom Because everyday, I remember I am a Papua New Guinean My life is embedded in the struggles of my people In the simplicity of their lifestyle In the joys of their laughter In the innocence of a new born babys cries Delivered across the mountains, streams and valleys In the faces and smiles of those beautiful children Old people, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters So here I sit and sit I dont wanna look at the time I dont wanna believe in their excuses I just keep pursing my countrys interest I know its hard, I know its frustrating But when I remember you all, I just dont wanna stop Because I am a Papua New Guinean And will always be a Papua New Guinean And thats the only thing that keeps me going
