Every morning I am once again standing amongst the dead of the first days Battle of Jonesboro (August 31, 1864) and once again I struggle to describe the events of the day. I have been telling the tales of the fighting for many years but now I am tasked to write it down and …for me that is tough. I am presently attempting to finish the book I was working on 20 years ago when I stumbled into the true stories in Gone With the Wind. The true stories were attached to the fighting and incidences in Jonesboro so it was a natural thing to veer off course and follow the other trail. But as I have said before, it was the battle fought in Jonesboro that gave Margaret Mitchell the story she would tell, and gave me the tour that I would sell so I believe I owe a debt to tell their story and to proclaim the heroism…of all who fought there. It was on August 31, 1864 that approximately 25,000 Confederates under General Hardee attacked approximately the same number Federals under General Logan just west of the town. As the Confederates drove toward the Federal guns and were cut down in wind rows, General Logan said of Confederate General Patton Anderson who was shot multiple times while riding ahead of his men, “it was a shame he was my enemy, I was so proud of him”. I wish you all a great day as I grab another cup of coffee and commune with my hero’s over the computer screen. I have nothing to complain about for my recollection of the battle will be done in the comfort of my home and under the blanket of freedom given by those who fell long ago. Let us rally on the high ground.
