Every morning a young man would go for a run along the beach. An older gentleman spent his mornings walking along that same beach. One day the shoreline was covered in starfish that had been washed up by the high tide. As the young man was running, he saw the older gentleman bend over, pick up a starfish and throw it back into the water. He then took a few more steps, picked up another starfish and threw it into the ocean. When the young man drew close enough, he asked the elderly gentleman what he was doing. The man replied, Im throwing some of the starfish back into the water so they dont dry up when the sun rises. The young man said, But whats the point? There are hundreds of starfish along the shore, you cant possibly make a difference. The old man paused briefly before bending down, picking up another starfish and tossing it back into the water. I made a difference to that one, he replied softly. Just because you cant make a difference for every single person, doesnt mean you should stop seeking to influence peoples lives. If you can make a difference in just one students life then you have been a successful teacher.....absolutely LOVE the inspiration I receive from my teachers.
