Every new year I see the same negativity aimed at resolution makers: Youre going to fail, I dont need a calendar to tell me when to make changes, Im simply awesome all the time; I dont know what your problem is. For me, the year is marked off in seasons. The tree begins to show its colors in the spring, offers up her fruit in the summer, begins to shed her splendor in the fall, and, at the most amazing time of year, turns her energy inward to renew, refresh, and rebuild. I love joining into the seasons rhythms and making time to contemplate and take inventory of the previous year, as well as ask myself tough and scary questions. And yes, I come out of that time refreshed, renewed, and with greater resolve. Do all of my resolutions come to fruition? No. If they dont, does that signal failure? No. I have gotten more joy out of the process of contemplation and the stretching of myself in new directions than I would have otherwise. Besides, as a wiser man than I once said, the unexamined life is not worth living. So you do you, and well do us--and I think that we can all find some room to celebrate the different ways that we all mark our journeys.
