Every night a big fat spider spins her web across my side doorway. I like to open the door and watch her work; she labors so diligently and makes the most amazing designs. A couple of times I have accidentally broken part of it and she has to go to work making repairs. How does she know how to do that? To make the straight lines and then the circles around and around. Does she have any consciousness at all? Any thoughts? Is she noisome and patient? Every morning the web is gone until the next evening when she starts her shift again. Clearly I was overly influenced by EB White as a child.
