Every now and again I get the feeling that Ive been blessed and fortunate to work with horses. They have given me the chance to learn so much. They have a sensitivity that is very unappreciated by so many. And was unappreciated by me for a very long time. But that time has come and passed. They are strong and hardy, and can endure the unimaginable, but that doesnt mean they should. Too many times what is asked of a horse is looked at from the outside of the horse. So many many times the horses I get to work with are dull, hard, braced through the head neck into the shoulders loins down into the feet. A horse needs to know when you need them to move, and when you dont. We need to know that as well. There is a time and a place we need to make the wrong thing difficult. ( thats the thing we dont need.) And the right thing easy. ( thats the thing we were asking for.) The horse needs to feel relief through release that is a complete release, that weighs nothing from you to the horse and back to you. Its a great feeling when you work with a horse that is dull and hard, and gets soft through a firmness. I looked at this dull hardness, and firm softness as a physical thing, but I have come to realize that it is mental. The horse gets dull due to a lack of release, and the softness comes from a firm understanding of what we do and dont need from the horse. Offering the best deal possible to the horse, without doing anymore than it takes, but letting the horse search letting them go after what feels better to them. So much to say and so little time to say it.
