Every now and then, I see a movie not because I want to, but because I know I need to. Usually these are war movies. Most recently, I rented Lone Survivor having read a little bit of the back story. I would encourage all Americans see this movie as well. It wont be fun or enjoyable. You wont need or want popcorn. You wont feel good at the end. But thats not why you watch it. You watch it to gain perspective, to better understand delicate situations, to appreciate the impossible decisions forced upon impossibly brave soldiers, and to purge your system from any remnants of entitlement, ingratitude, or small-mindedness. After watching a movie like this, its hard to be impressed with actors, musicians, and sports figures because whatever talent they have is completely dwarfed by the honor, humility, courage, and sacrificial attitudes that characterize our military. In my opinion, we owe it to the soldiers past and present, to their families, and ultimately, to our own freedom to watch this movie.
