Every once in a while, I receive a question at GardenAdvisor@SuburbanLG that I believe should be noted here on Facebook... There are varieties of Hydrangeas which will ONLY bloom on OLD WOOD. You may wish to give them some added protection from snow pack during the winter months. This is simple...Make a fence around them with chicken wire (should be about 4 inches taller than the plant). Add leaves (full, but loose...dont compact them) to the top. If you wish, you can cover with burlap and tie with twine. As soon as Spring arrives, remove the fence and carefully remove all of the leaves. Ta-da! For an added benefit, mulch now with Cotton Burr Compost. It will keep the moisture levels constant AND provide anti-fungal protection for you prized plants. :) Heres to HAPPY Hydrangeas!
