Every picture tells a story: these are my two grandfathers about 12 years before my parents married. They lived next door to each other at Bank Top, Woodside, the Keenans at No 5 and the Arthurs at No 6. This is the back door of the Arthur household circa 1920; on the left my maternal grandfather Patrick Keenan, in the middle my father John Arthur and on the right my paternal grandfather Fewster Arthur. The picture was almost certainly taken by my fathers older brother Tommy Arthur shortly before he left for Spain as we know he was living there by 1921 and he was a keen amateur photographer who was probably about to take my father somewhere as he is dressed whilst my two grandfathers appear to be in work clothes before their shift at Greenside Colliery where they were both employed. The old creased print had belonged to my father and the other cleaner copy was among a number of old negatives my cousin Tom Arthur had recently developed which had belonged to his father, more or less proving his father, my uncle Tommy, had taken the original photo 85 years ago as I suspected. So we now have two pictures developed from the same negative 85 years and several hundred miles apart - the miracle of modern technology!
