Every so often we hear people wonder why our adoption fees are what they are. Heres a little bit of why: By the time youve gotten your Frenchie rescue, the rescue organization will likely have paid for any or all of the following: that dogs spay or neuter, microchip, brought him or her up to date on all vaccinations, have possibly had surgery done to help their breathing, had MRIs or other diagnostic exams to see about problems in their knees or spine, cleared up worms or parasites, UTIS, bloody diarrhea, or flea bite dermatitis, uncovered the source of food or environmental allergies, and in the case of some of our dogs, attended training classes or hired a dog trainer or behaviorist to get to the bottom of the personality issues that may have driven that dog to our rescue. Our most expensive dogs leave us with a negative balance compared to their adoption fee, which is why we often run fundraisers in addition to charging so much for adoption. (Such as our Roxy fundraiser, or our current Scentsy party!) Our magnificent foster homes shoulder many of the ordinary daily costs of having an extra dog in their home, and some of the extraordinary costs as well, bless em. They wheedle and cajole their vets into lowering THEIR costs as much as possible, and run their own fundraisers and auctions to try to cover extra costs that their dogs have incurred. We are all volunteers and everything we do for our dogs we do for love, not money; we do not reimburse our volunteers for the many miles they will travel in a transport, or the time they lost at work for having dropped everything to run a foster dog to the vet in an emergency. We do not pay our webmaster, our Board, or our Coordinators, and indeed, those people have shouldered and continue to shoulder vet costs that have fallen short, not to mention the additional costs that an organization can incur just by existing, such as website hosting, having a bank account, etc. So, the next time you wonder why does that rescue dog costs so much, you should really be wondering why it costs so little!
