Every summer, thousands of people enjoy hiking in Missouri State Parks. To help keep kids safe, the Missouri State Parks Ranger Program provides the nationally acclaimed “Hug-A-Tree and Survive” program. Inspired by the 1981 search for a young boy in southern California, the program teaches children ages 7–12 the most basic and vital survival principles. A lost child’s natural response is to go back the way they came and they often become more lost. The Hug-A-Tree program helps children learn to stay in one place and wait for help to come to them. The program also gives children ideas for basic items to bring when they go outdoors. Contact a state park near you to find out where the next Hug-A-Tree program will be offered.
