Every time a police officer or police union expresses anger about a statement of solidarity with Eric Garner and the statement #icantbreathe they are effectively engaging in self-incriminating speech. The movement is against systemic racism in policing and police brutality. It is not a statement that every police officer is bad. However, when police choose to defensively associate themselves with these acts of brutality by angrily criticizing those who condemn such brutality it is they who are sending the message that they support these illegal and unacceptable acts of brutality. In effect, through their regular and widespread condemnation of police brutality opponents they are demonstrating how widespread and systemic the problem is within the police.
