Every time during this Christmas season that I open my email, Im bombarded with fantastic offers from all kinds of stores and online shopping sites that promise unbelievable deals of all kinds. My wife even bought several items from a website that had prices which seemed, well... incredible. Unfortunately, as some of the merchandise has arrived it hasnt lived up to the promise of the pictures that were posted on the site. The original hope we had of purchasing items at a deep discount has been squashed. You might say the deals were too good to be true. So whats my point? It is simply this... there are times when we want so badly to believe in something that we actually talk ourselves into believing its true. Sometimes we believe it in spite of all the evidence being to the contrary. We approach God in the same way. We want so badly to live our lives on our own terms, to be accountable to no one continuing to do those things that we know are wrong but dont want to give up, that we deny God and sometimes even deny His existence in order to convince ourselves we are living a life that is acceptable. But deep down we know that something is wrong. As Ravi Zacharias puts it “God has put enough into this world to make faith in Him a most reasonable thing. But He has left enough out to make it impossible to live by sheer reason alone. Faith and reason must always work together in that plausible blend.” In other words we have a problem. We cannot depend solely on ourselves but we refuse to fully acknowledge God as creator and author of our lives. If that was the end of the story it would be tragic. But heres where the news gets good. There is one more unbelievable offer this Christmas season. Only this one lives up to every promise that has been made and more! This gift is free to you but it came at a tremendous cost to the one who provides it. In fact he paid for it with his life. It is the free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ and he wants to give it to you. All you have to do is take it. Will you take it? It will transform your life in such an unbelievable way that youll wonder why you never saw this gift before. Oh, you say, I cant believe in such nonsense. Well, the Apostle John said of Jesus: “We have seen with our eyes, we have heard, we have touched with our hands and we testify to the majesty of our Lord!” The apostles died horrible deaths in order to make sure we knew the truth. As people we will believe many things... we believe on line shopping offers, we believe in coaches and players that we think will save our sports teams, we believe eye witness accounts of all types of historical events, yet we refuse to believe in the God that created us. Well, today I ask you what more do you need. Stop doubting and believe!
