Every time something like a shooting happens mental health is - TopicsExpress

Every time something like a shooting happens mental health is automatically assumed...the scary thing is - whether he is mentally ill or not - that only serves to further stigmatize mental illness resulting in a much greater chance that a person who needs help will stay silent out of fear that people will equate them with people who become violent like this. The majority of people who are mentally ill (including myself) in one form or another never become violent but labelling tragedies like this with mental illness causes further harm to those who suffer, driving them/us deeper into the dark corners. Lets not make assumptions. I understand the desire: the situation is easier to absorb if we can use labels and it becomes somehow fixable when its a specific rather than systematic problem...but labels dont belong on people...they only ever cause grief. There is human tragedy here on both sides and I really feel the best thing for healing (and to encourage those suffering in silence with mental illness) is to allow ourselves to feel our feelings, make a safe place in our lives for conversation about our feelings/needs and encourage one another regularly. My two cents.
