Every time there is a rape, media follows a set routine. A very sad routine. But this time around, media did even better and that made me sick in the pit of my stomach - it was the way our media went after Uber like lynch mobs, as if rape never happened in their own backyards, how women activists fought like righteous cats n dogs for their two minutes of limelight, how a tiny party like AAP, with over 5 of its leaders with rape/molestation cases on them, politicised women safety and Congress shamelessly went to town proclaiming their love for women and how they formed the grand Nirbhaya fund.... I was taken 21 years back to a dialogue by Meenakshi Sheshadari in Damini, and realised that nothing had changed even after 21 years. Quoting the dialogue from memory Urmi ke balaatkaar ko dhanda banaya hai inhone. Urmi ki tabahi ko chatpati kahani bana kar kishton mein becha hai press ne. Toh uski barbadi ko paise batorne ka zariya banaya hai police ne aur doctors ne... Urmi ka balaatkaar kya dekha maine. Usse Insaaf dilane kya nikali main. Har gali, har Nukkad mein uska balaatkaar hua. Kabhi police thane mein toh kabhi iss Insaaf ke Mandir mein. Baar baar balaatkaar hua uska, har baar balaatkaar hua uska. Haath kahaan the? Haath kahaan the? Baahon par ya kandhon par? Kamar par ya jhaangon par? Chhati par ya ghutno par? Kitni nangi thi woh? Yeh sawaal zaroori the par kis tarah pucche gaye? Aur jab yeh sawaal pucche ja rahe the toh kyon nahin uthi ek bhi awaaz? Would I be wrong to say that the real rapist today was the media? In cahoots with political leaders who were in power for the last 60 years, and those who have 5 of their leaders with rape charges, and those 5 star activists... werent they the true rapists today, even more than that cab driver?
