Every time you tell someone to not let [insert internet harassment incident] get to you youre perpetuating the myth that the internet is separate from real human interactions and therefore less important. Youre trivializing the harassment and by extension the very real mental (and sometimes even physical) damage it does. Furthermore, when you say this to women and POC about gendered/racist harassment youre siding with the oppressors and helping to silence us. Rather than criticizing the harassers youd rather ignore it (because ignoring problems makes them go away, right?) and tell the victims to just keep quiet. Stop doing that. Break out of your comfort zone and actually side with the oppressed. If someone is getting beaten up online and you wont do anything then I have to assume you wouldnt do anything if it was real life either. In both cases, youre not my comrade.
