Every week we will be featuring a project that adds to the beauty and importance of landscape architectural profession. This project is one of our own, a front entry garden in Mississauga. As it happens all too often, suburban houses lack that key connection with the landscape around them. Architecturally the house stands like a lone object, unrelated to the surroundings. In this project from the start, the front yard of the house lacked a sense of entry. Existing interlock stone needed to be redone in order to work with the architecture of the house. By using symmetrical lines of stone bands and planting aligned with the house, the design extended the architecture and unified the property, offering a greater sense of place as one enters the front yard. Making the landscape work with the architecture breaks the traditional homogeneity of the suburban lawn and creates a harmonious space, a special place that highlights the owner’s individuality.
