Every year, Abertay runs a mentoring programme for third year - TopicsExpress

Every year, Abertay runs a mentoring programme for third year students in conjunction with the National Mentoring Consortium (NMC). Applications are now open. The aim of the programme is to help students improve their personal and professional skills and prepare for the world of work. Participants are matched to mentors based on career interests, course and gender. All mentors work at organisations relevant to the subjects studied at Abertay, and these organisations include industries such as business, law and the public sector. As well as providing students with relevant business skills, the programme is for students and mentors to build a relationship which provides both parties with development opportunities. The programme runs for six months, from November through to May. Once matched up, each student and mentor creates a Learning Contract, setting out specific objectives and an action plan. Following an induction and training event, participants have monthly mentoring meetings (two one-hour sessions), usually at the mentors workplace. Speaking about the programme, Joe Greenland – Director of NMC – said: “Mentoring is now recognised as an effective tool for enhancing graduate career prospects and promoting diversity in all areas. This scheme offers students a wonderful chance to focus on their future careers and prepare for a smooth and successful entry into the world of work.” Juwairiyyah Nisar, who took part in the programme in 2012, said: “Participating in this programme was a fantastic learning experience, giving me invaluable information and knowledge about which skills, talents and personalities employers are looking for in future graduates. This was an amazing and beneficial opportunity and I am privileged to have been involved! I would definitely recommend other motivated students to become positively recognised by applying!” Denis McGurk, Head of Business Connections Transformation at BT, who was a mentor in 2012, said: “Mentoring is a two way street which is enjoyable and challenging in equal measures for both the mentor and mentee. It is more than just the mentor sharing knowledge and experience – it’s about nurturing the talents of the mentee, giving them confidence and guidance on career options, whilst identifying specific development areas that will support the mentee to fulfil their potential.” If you are interested in taking part in this year’s programme, please email Carol Ann Smith [email protected] or drop into the Development & Alumni Office, Room 3024. The deadline for applications is Thursday October 31st.
