Every year I get involved with a childrens charity event. This year Im trying to help a high poverty, classroom from Hillcrest Drive Elementary School in Los Angeles, CA to be able to make a trip to the The Gentle Barn. From their teacher Mrs. McCormick: At the sanctuary, the students will learn about the animals and their tragic stories. They will be taught not only the importance of respecting all forms of life but also the values of empathy and kindness as well. This trip will show them that they are but a part of the much bigger world around them, and it will give them an idea of their responsibility to honor the planet and all things on it. It will also show them, by these animals examples, what some of the consequences of a lack of compassion and justice are and some of the ways caring and taking action can improve the plight of others. I believe that visiting the sanctuary will be beneficial for my children. These animals all have histories of abuse, neglect, abandonment or worse. Many of my inner-city children share similar pasts. It is my hope that hearing stories of the animals will help them see that change is possible. Identifying with the obstacles the animals at The Gentle Barn have faced will, I believe, help my children to understand that they too can overcome adversity and look forward to a bright future.
