Every year the City of Cape Town’s Parks Department is faced with a difficult decision: neat, mowed parks and verges or a display of newly blossomed spring flowers. A decision either way delights some residents while leaving other unhappy. Long-grass policy is based partially on environmental benefits, including reduced pesticide use, improved biodiversity, increased bank stabilization of drainage areas and reduced competition with weeds. In Germany the policy leans towards leaving some areas unmown as shown in the photos and others mowed more regularly. The suggestion in Harfield is to experiment to determine what works best for each park and to use signage as in the photos to explain the process.
