Our basic rights and freedoms have been under assault daily and the protests that are now engulfing the streets of Istanbul, Ankara and a multitude of other cities throughout the country testify to the anger and dissatisfaction of our people with the current status quo. The right to protest and freedom of speech, which have been guaranteed in the EU charter, have been suspended throughout the country. The excessive violence of police and security forces, which continues unabated, stands in stark contrast to the peaceful means of protest on the part of ordinary citizens. Tear Gas, water cannons and physical attacks upon protestors are an affront to international human rights law and to the values of the EU itself. Prime Minister has also applied psychological violence to protestors by threatening them to ‘unleash’ his voters on the streets. We, concerned protestors, ask you to cancel your meeting with Tayyip Erdogan and we further invite you to visit Gezi Park to show your solidarity with us and with the values that EU claims to stand for.
