Everyday Chi Awareness Tips to enhance your life energy Life or Death? Bruce Frantzis, our teacher, once was asked how a person could best practice a certain qigong exercise to gain more life energy. Bruce could have given many different answers to this question. This time he gave a big picture answer. He said, Practice so that you move toward life rather than death. People were surprised to hear him frame practice in such stark terms. But he went on to explain that practice can become a deadly event in your day, where you dutifully practice things that you think you should practice. Practice can become a chore that takes your life energy, rather than enhancing it. Of course, a key aspect of practice is the mental attitude that you bring to it. Are you rigid in your ideas of how, what, and why you practice? Do you strangle the possibilities of your practice because you refuse to play with how you approach it? Do you have certain expectations about the experiences you should have that get in the way of your finding whats truly alive - and fun - in your practice? In contrast, practice can be a joyful event, in which every practice is a chance to have a new experience of your art. When you practice this way, your mind is open to all the possibilities in which your practice and experience can grow. You relax and soften, and your life energy naturally flows and grows. You can also frame your life in these terms as easily as you can your practice of an exercise. What activities do you do that bring you to life, and which deaden you? To increase your daily energy, can you find a way to do more of the former and less of the latter? Or can you find a way to bring life to those activities that currently drag you down? Often in these Chi Awareness tips we focus on small things in life that we can do to increase our awareness of and enhance our life energy. The big picture is also important. Are the activities of your life - what you do and the way you do them - taking you toward life or death? This is a great question to reflect on regularly. Enjoy.
