Everyone: Since 1984, the Armed Forces have set aside a special day to acknowledge the significant contributions of our military spouses. This year, on Friday, 9 May 2014, we celebrate Military Spouse Appreciation Day. Today we reaffirm our steadfast commitment to supporting and honoring the husbands and wives of our Coast Guardsmen. To all of our spouses that take care of everything and everyone while we are at sea ... here are some reflections and words by your loved ones: ***** Tona, There is not enough words in the world to express how thankful I am to know that our two babies are in the best hands when I am so far away from you all. What you do at home, is the only reason I can do what we do out here! I will never truly understand the sacrifices and trials that you go through day in and day out when I am gone, but what I do know is that making decisions for the sake of your family is NEVER in vain. My peace at the end of each day is outside looking up into the sky and wishing on each and every star that I see. I am believing that at that exact moment, I am looking at the same sky that both Lola and Mateo are peacefully sleeping under. I hope I can make them as proud of me as I am of both of them! You can kiss your family and friends good-bye and put miles between you, but at the same time you carry them with you in your heart, your mind, your stomach, because you do not just live in a world but a world lives in you. ~Frederick Buechner ***** Amber: Thank you for all that you do for me, the ship, and our family. Funny how a chance encounter in the Senate has led us down the path of marriage - to now having three great kids living in Key West. The path has not been easy, but the rewards have been awesome. Thank you for supporting me and thank you for your sacrifices for the Coast Guard during my sea tours on board HARRIET LANE/MOHAWK and the lengthy work hours at Headquarters.
