Everyone, Today we celebrate the 94th Anniversary of the Chief - TopicsExpress

Everyone, Today we celebrate the 94th Anniversary of the Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Coast Guard. On May 18th 1920, the 66th Congress and the Coast Guard authorized the CHIEF PETTY OFFICER in the Coast Guard; the CHIEF then secured a permanent place in the chain of command. Two years later in 1922 the first Chiefs Uniform appeared. It was similar to the Navys CPO uniform with the exception of the CG Shield on the right sleeve. The trademark of the Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer is the Anchor; it was inherited from the Revenue Cutter Service. The fouled anchor with a shield superimposed to its shank (the emblem of the Officers of the Revenue Cutter Service) is still worn on the shoulder boards of the Coast Guard Flag Officers. Note: Many thanks to BMCS Jack Crowley (USCG Retired) for reminding me of this major milestone and I stole liberally from his e-mail for this posting. Lots of great stuff going on board over the weekend. Saturday morning I qualified Ensign Stephanie Mewes as an Underway OOD and that was followed by watching BM3 Kyle Threm smoke his Coxswain board. Operations this weekend have caused me to postpone BM3 Dylan Nighs coxswain board - but I believe I am on firm ground saying that he will ace the board as well in the coming day(s). So, I am very pleased to note that the Mohawk crew has nine qualified Underway OODs, nine Underway Engineers of the Watch, and soon to be seven Coxswains. Pretty impressive stats if you ask me. Congrats are also in order for OS2 Justin Pago and IT2 Ryan Krueger for passing their requirements testing for First Class Petty Officer. Justin soon heads to Sector Mobile; Ryan is headed north this summer to Kittery, Maine to serve in our sister ship CGC Tahoma. Saturday afternoon we divided the whole crew up into 11 teams to compete in Damage Control Olympics. I hope to post some photos showing the crew in action in the coming days. Hope everyone had a great weekend, Adam Morrison
