Everyone in rehab loves Danielle, and why wouldnt they? Its our third visit here, but we get to go home on Sunday and pick up her out-patient rehab next week. The op clinic was nice enough to just keep the original schedule so we are going to skip home therapy. Danielle is not quite up to her walking strength yet, but is moving along nicely. Her speech is complicated: she cannot follow verbal requests or cues, like Touch your nose--she just looks confused and says, I dont know! However if she reads the same command, she will do it immediately. Its interesting and despairing at the same time. She gets frustrated very easily, and will yell at her arm or whoever is handy because there is no filter for her emotions. Luckily everyone who knows her knows shes naturally sweet and that this is a symptom of her brain injuries, so no one takes it personally. Our poor friend Eileen got a really nasty verbal barrage last night; its hard to absorb but luckily Danielle will forget the whole thing in 3 minutes. Sorry, E! Mostly shes her sweet self and she was very happy to get the going-home news yesterday. She loves to be outside, and Marisa her speech therapist is always willing to conduct her sessions outdoors. Danielle likes to watch the trains go by (the track goes right through the hospital complex), and yesterday she said, Its so nice to see a train go by in your own town. Meanwhile, my own brain is in decline. I went home to shower and change yesterday afternoon, then drove up to Sanford FL for my Family Night show at Gators Dockside and discovered I didnt bring my guitar. Scott the manager (who is aware of our situation) was totally cool about it and told me to go back to be with Danielle and wed call this one a wash. Apologies to anyone who made it out; hopefully you got a face painting or balloon, and Ill be back in two weeks.
