Everyone is invited to a talk entitled: Islam in Europe, an exception or a model to be given by Fr. Pierre de Charentenay, S.J., PhD on Friday, 23 August 2013, 4:30-6:00 at Ateneo de Manila University CTC 201 Abstract Fruit of migration of the end of the XX° century, Islam in Europe is recent, but Muslims are now more than 5% of the population of the continent. Does that mean that a rejection of this new religion might be possible? Is the conflict, Islam versus European modernity, inevitable in the future? If the question of number is important, the process on integration seems to be essential. For the most part, Muslims in Europe look for their integration in the European societies, where they find many advantages. The integration does not mean a loss of their identity, in the framework of the local law. It is the fruit of negotiations with the different states where they live. Becoming more like the Europeans, they seem to be an exception in the world scene of Muslims. But they might shape a new model of being Muslim, through an acceptance of pluralism in democratic countries. About the speaker Fr. Pierre de Charentenay, S.J., Ph.D., a former president of a Jesuit University in Paris, France, is a visiting professor of Political Science Department and the European Studies Program at the Ateneo de Manila University. He has been the editor-in-chief of Etudes, a Jesuit review of contemporary culture from 2004 to 2012. Etudes is renowned in France and Europe for its social analysis.
