Everyone is seeking an immediate solution to a problem that was created over generations of familial breakdown and government practices that plain out dont work properly. Gov. Bryant wants to attack the symptoms of poverty without addressing the underlying issue of why individuals in poverty tend to remain in poverty. You cant heal a deep wound by putting a band aid on the skin. You may hide the scars on the surface but there is still pain and suffering deeper down. You must heal from the inside out not from the outside in. Yes some of our programs need to be updated but we must also seek to understand why. People tend to do what they know or are familiar with. In order to help someone do better you must be willing to show them how, you have got to get your hands dirty. The Associated Press asked Gov. Bryant how to improve Mississippis poverty rate. Heres what he said, and -- linked -- what we think of it: We’ve got a lot of families that have no father in the home, that have for three generations have never seen a parent come home from work… We’re going to ask the Legislature to remove any winnings at a casino from a parent who may owe child support. So you won’t be going around gambling and winning at the dice table and not taking care of your children… Every time we think we have a government program to solve it, it doesn’t seem to work properly. What will work is the restoration of the family system, adequate schools and job opportunities for every student that has the ability to fill those jobs.
