Everyone, please listen up and PLEASE do comment down below with any useful information that I can use. One of my classmates in Social and Culture change class this morning came up to me after the class and immediately told Carol and me that she have a deaf 6 years old niece who is in a hearing school and she have a cochlear implants. She cant communicate with others or with her own parents except to pull at their sleeves and point at things or just straight out pointing at things. They live in a small rural town a hour or hour and half away from here (there is a reason why I mentioned this). This year is her first year with an interpreter and when the classmate mentioned that, the red flag came up in my head because typically in rural towns away from any huge cities like Montgomery, they would hire cheapest option which is crappy interpreters that barely can sign or is still learning themselves (and most commonly, they dont have a permit or certification which is completely illegal). Carol and I immediately explained to her that it is very important that the deaf girl gets proper help (go to deaf school, get exposure to deaf people because thats HER people. HER culture. HER language. And others are unwittingly denying her of that). The classmate mentioned that one of the parents wanted to send her to the deaf school and other one wants to keep her in hearing school. I just added her on facebook and I am planning on doing a group chat with her so we can give her all of the information we can. She is going to see about getting the mother involved in the group chat as well. My plan is to do it gradually when it comes to the mother so we wont scare her off. If any of you people who are really knowledgeable about those kind of things would be interested in joining the group chat (if the mother is willing) and help me try to convince the mother that the deaf school and being around her own people will definitely help her development out, then let me know. I am considering starting making noises about this kind of thing and start a movement because too many of our children are being left behind or taken advantaged of by THOSE kind of hearing people.
