Everyone should be eating yogurt daily, including toddlers and babies. It really is true about the probiotics helping not just your digestion, but immune system. I researched this several years ago and eating yogurt daily helped with my digestive issues immediately. The difference between probiotic "supplements" and probiotics found naturally in yogurt, is that in yogurt, the probiotics occur naturally during the cultured process, where in the supplements the probiotics are manipulated and changed of their original element to offer it in a supplement form. I have learned that the more natural your source of food the better for your body. The probiotics are strands of good bacteria which are what fight in your gut to maintain a good balance for digestion and strengthening of your immune system--also really great for warding off stomach bugs. I think of teachers especially who could benefit from this. In addition, organic honey is a good "pre-biotic", providing nutrients for the probiotics in your stomach. I started taking a little organic honey every day a couple of years ago and never get sinus infections any more--I used to get them monthly! The important thing with organic honey is that it is local and not store-bought (even if advertised "organic")--all stores have to follow FDA guidelines and heat the honey, which kills off much of the live beneficial bacteria. There are also a wide range benefits of honey for the entire body, not just the gut flora and immune system. I compared brands of yogurt at Wal-Mart today, and Dannon Activia and Yoplait are great. I would actually buy both brands and alternate between the two each day, because each of them carry a different strand of beneficial bacteria. I would steer clear of the "light" versions, because artificial sweeteners, such as Phenylalanine aka "aspartame" are more harmful to the probiotics than sugar is. If you do not buy either Yoplait or Dannon brands, make sure the yogurt is labeled "Live & Active Cultures" and that the sugar content is not too high--as this is damaging to the probiotics. And, both yogurts are GLUTEN FREE. :-)
