Everyone still in a huff and puff about grease balls and sewage - TopicsExpress

Everyone still in a huff and puff about grease balls and sewage but no one seems concerned that the fish your eating likely has consumed bio accumulated plastics up the food chain. No one talks about the fact that there are really no banned products or chemicals in Bermuda. 99% of the shampoos, conditioners and lotions on the shelves have phalates which go right out with the sewage, making their way into our food chain and back onto our shores without ever biodegrading. We follow a cosmetic industry that polices itself, america (ewg.org) instead of abiding by the stricter european standards. The main clean ups on the island are thanks to charitable organizations (KBB in particular) and are not done as frequently as they need to be, actually, it could never be frequent enough. Prison sentences are handed out often and we pay to house and feed prisoners that have had such minor offenses, its laughable. Yet no judge has ever thought - It would be better for my country if I had this person pick up 20 bags of trash. And while there is a vast array of plastics that wash in from around the world, there is a vast amount that comes from our own shores, from our own ignorant people. That being said - when was the last time any one was given a ticket for littering? Kindly field rd is an embarrassment for us every day. Concession stands like Horseshoe Bay being allowed to serve in styrofoam containers is an embarrassment for us every day. The fact that the importation of styrofoam isnt already banned is a shocking disappointment that proves Bermuda is still trailing behind instead of being a leader in protecting what we have both here and in a global sense. So... When you sit down to enjoy that rock fish at dinner, please consider that the grassroot movements are doing about all they can to protect our food sources, our tourism product and our health and theyre waiting for government officials to care and make the decisions necessary to facilitate drastic and continued change. news.sciencemag.org/environment/2014/06/ninety-nine-percent-oceans-plastic-missing
