Everyone who is monitoring the hostage situation in Sulu is closely watching the developments on the island today. news reports said 3,000 soldiers are poise to rescue the two German hostages held by the bandits. reports also said the family of the victims are also there willing to pay the ransom demanded by the kidnappers. Expect some developments today up to this weekend. Sigurado ang press conference ani with the rescued hostages. My thoughts goes back to year 2000 when then President Estrada blockaded an entire island and unleashed 5,000 soldiers including the 1st Marine Brigade and the super elite PNP Special Action Force. Sweep, destroy and rescue was the operating mantra back then. OV10 planes bomb suspected Abu Sayyaf camps and almost flattened the town of Maimbung. The first casualties of the military campaign were children who were playing in Maimbung. No foreigners were rescued. Most of those who got away were released because ransom was paid or they escaped when their captors were sleeping. Many of us who know the situation in Sulu that the military never stage a successful rescue operation. Somebody commented that the soldiers now are better trained that those of 14 years ago. I say let the military changed my views. for me those who are wishing it will happen, have too much Hollywood movies. the reality is that no military rescue operation have ever made in Sulu. so in this case, expect a ransom to be paid. The ransom will be divided by the powers that be and the bandits.
