Everyones so quick to settle questions these days with a smartphone and a quick Google search that its kind of refreshing when people still tap old-fashioned methods. Grabbing my weekly home-cooked meal with my parents tonight, a question arose about how far apart Beijing and Tokyo are. The lights in my parents kitchen were off because there was enough natural light when the meal started, though it had started to grow dark. So as the geography debate ensued, my mom slipped away, and - in complete sincerity, not at all trying to be funny - returned to the table with an atlas...and a flashlight(!), and proceeded to illuminate the answer for us. The whole performance caused visions of Ben Franklin consulting an encyclopedia by candle light to flicker across my mind, and I imagine my Moms time-tested strategies are something that her three-and-a-half decades of high school students can picture well.
