Evgeny Ilyin’s biography is somewhat typical for an artist of the socialist realism tradition. A son and a grandson of revolutionaries, he participated in the organisation of Komsomol groups when he was 14, and participated in the Civil War at 15. After the war, he returned to his native Samara and in 1922 entered the Workers Faculty, evening classes preparing for higher education. There is a wonderful series of Volga landscapes from 1923-1924 shown at the exhibition. His early landscapes are filled with decorative colour strokes. Gradually, his landscapes developed tonally and became deeper in expression.
