Evidence now suggests that women who are well-informed about the pros and cons are more likely to decline testing, even when the tests are free, indicating that the average mother-to-be might not have all the facts. Ive been working with expectant families for ten years, and I cant tell you how many times a) a woman has not been provided with adequate information upon which to make an informed decision and b) the risks have been glossed over in an effort to get her to comply. In Empowered Birth classes, there is an entire class devoted to decision making skills--one of the highlights is BRAND. What are the benefits, risks and alternatives for a proposed test or interventions? What happens if we dont do anything, or we wait? (not now or nothing) Finally, decide. (without medical professionals in the room--parents need privacy and space!) npr.org/blogs/health/2014/09/23/350862102/more-women-skip-prenatal-tests-after-learning-about-risks?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=npr&utm_term=nprnews&utm_content=20140924
