About ten years ago, heading to the airport after a week in better towns in Morocco and with a few hours to spare, we killed time on the beach at Agadir. A young Berber guy, about 18 years-of-age, who was playing beach football asked us to look after his stuff. When he wanted a breather he would come back and chat with us. He was the son of a farmer with a small-holding about 20 kilometres from Agadir, the family able to get by but not much more. Little opportunity for people like him to better themselves, no matter how hard his father and mother worked With a little prodding he talked about the political situation and how it affected ordinary Moroccans. He talked about the corruption in high and middle places. What of the King?, I asked. The King is a wanker he replied. Dangerous words in what is a heavy-handed police-state, but he evidently trusted us. Before we left for the airport, and home, I asked him if he harboured any desire to go to Europe or the US. His reply was immediate - No. You leave shit, you come back to shit. Im staying to try to fix it. Whenever I have begun to despair at the seeming impossibility of real change here in Ireland, I think of that brilliant young guy. You leave shit, you come back to shit. If Liam Neeson had the good fortune to have met and spoken to that young guy his response today might be very different. There is no room for being turned off. We have to deal with the shit, otherwise we will keep coming back to it. The ruling elite are wankers. The State is utterly corrupt. 2015 will be the moment we are tested. Lets rise to it.
