Evie was diagnosed with Reflex Anoxic (asystolic) Seizures (RAS) - TopicsExpress

Evie was diagnosed with Reflex Anoxic (asystolic) Seizures (RAS) nearly 12 months ago following a short period under the neurology team. RAS is a term used to describe a seizure that is neither epileptic or due to cyclic breath holding, but that results from a brief stoppage in Evies heart through excess activity of the vagus nerve. This causes Evie to stop breathing, turn blue & have a seizure, they are always self resolving due to the heart restarting. However in all my years as a nurse & mummy nothing quite prepared me for witnessing my own child have seizures they are possibly one of the scariest things Ive witnessed and the thought that there brought on by a temporary stoppage of her heart makes me panic even more. RAS seizures can be brought on by anything such as fright, shock, a fall, bang to the head.. And as we all know Evies incredibly clumsy!! Evie is also diagnosiss with additional seizure complex that is thought maybe an additional complication of her meningitis. She has an extremely low seizure threshold and any cold, virus, temperature or food reaction can cause seizures, Obviously Evie having low igG immune subclasses Doesnt help as she is susceptible to so many more germs despite being on prophylactic antibiotics as a precaution. There is no treatment for RAS although if they continue into older childhood they can consider a pacemaker to override the temporary stoppages. Evie has also been under review and observation for absence pauses which they was concerned maybe of an epileptic nature, however after many tests & investigations this has finally be diagnosed as sensory processing absences disorder linked with her sensory processing difficulties. đź’›#raising awareness đź’›
