Evolution of Man. Contd.. Hominoids( 24 mya) are quadrupeds walking on all four and they are a sub group of primates including apes. They have flexible forelimbs to climb trees. But they are different from monkeys, like having a larger body and not having a tail. Hominoids have larger period of infant development and dependency than monkeys. Hominids( 5.6mya) have evolved from hominoids but have larger brain than hominoids. Hominids have an upright posture and bipedal locomotion ( walking on two feet). Hominids have marked difference in their hands( precision grip) which enables them to make tools and use tools. Hominids are of African origin. Australopethecus( 5.6 mya) is the earliest Hominid, found in East Africa.It retained many features of an ape such like large back teeth, limited dexterity of hand , limited upright posture and spent a lot of time in trees.Australopithecus was discovered in Olduvai Gorge in 1959. Hominids belong to family Hominidae, which includes all forms of human beings. Hominids have two branches- Austalopithecus and Homo. Homo have larger brain and smaller and lighter teeth and jaws.Homo is a latin word meaning man.It has three branches:- 1. Homo Habilis. The tool maker. Evidence from Omo( Ethiopia) and Olduvai Gorge( Tanzania) 2. Homo Erectus. the upright man 3. Homo Sapiens. The wise thinking man.Larger brain with more intelligence and better memory. reduced outward protrusion of jaws and teeth became smaller. We are the Homo Sapiens !
