Evolving Health nursing role to Community Organizing nurse... by: Jessica Mae Morano Maceda Nursing practice is client-centered and requires unique knowledge, competencies, and skills. One year ago, my role was limited to taking care of the sick. Diagnosing pathologic diseases that poisons a human body. Months after I took the board exam, I was then obscured as to where am I going. I dont have a passion. What Im only sure of, is I want a living that could uplift the needy and never to engage in the real set-up of public hospitals that is in the favor of those only who are known and those who can afford. And so, I sent my application to the companies where I want to be with. One of my option was DSWD. I was called once, but, unluckily, I failed. To my surprise, last quarter of the year 2013, I recieved a text message, instructing me to go to DSWD office, but I was in Surigao that time, and so, I ignored the text. When I was about to go home a week after, I texted the number and asked if I can still have my interview. Yes the unknown number replied. HR office was puzzled as to who am I. To cut the story short, she had mistaken me as the applicant for the PDO position, but had given me the chance to apply, pandagdag daw kasi kulang ng aplikante. while waiting for my turn, I can hear the others experiences, I have to be honest, but I was threatened and was planning to back out since most of them had already supervisory experiences and I was the youngest at 21 year old! I was not hoping then, but fortunately, I was told to report to their office, and that I am already hired! Entering KC was my turning point. It was a life changing experience. I can say, I have transcended to encompass advocacy, community organizing, and political and social reform. Today, I am not only trying to cure human bodys illness, but I am part of a program which is looking for an intervention for the communitys venom that historically hindered peoples growth. Social intervention of addressing complex, multi-causal, community problems. Specifically, these are roles that involve collaboration and partnerships with communities and populations to address social conditions and problems. And as I celebrate my 1st year in KC family, I am PROUD to be part of a team who is trying to multiply the good workers that once have built and nurtured me. Workers who are todays modern heroes. Proud to be an agent of change!
