Ex-Burnham clerk gets 18 months for $650,000 theft Print Email September 09, 2014 1:10 pm CHICAGO (AP) — A 70-year-old former village clerk was sentenced Tuesday to 18 months in prison for stealing more than $650,000 from her suburban Chicago community and spending much of it at casinos, federal prosecutors said. Nancy Dobrowski pleaded guilty in May as part of a plea deal to wire fraud and filing false tax returns. She held the elected position of Burnham clerk for more than 30 years before she resigned last year. U.S. District Judge Charles Kocoras said Dobrowski committed nine years of pillage and ordered her to begin serving her sentenced Oct. 21, prosecutors said. The judge ordered Dobrowski to pay nearly $914,000 in restitution — nearly $710,000 to the village of Burnham and about $204,000 to the Internal Revenue Service. The judge noted that Dobrowski is unable to pay the amount. Before sentencing the judge heard statements from Burnham Mayor Robert Polk and other village officials about the impact of Dobrowskis theft on the municipality. Dobrowski fixed records to conceal she was pocketing money paid for sewer services, liquor licenses, towing and for other fees or fines, prosecutors have said. The thefts happened between 2004 and 2013, they said.
