Ex-offenders face many challenges in their search to acquire employment. The biggest hurdle is the prejudice by some employers toward ex-offenders. As an ex-offender, the manner in which you respond to the prejudices that you will encounter throughout the rest of your life, will ultimately determine your destiny. This is especially true for non-white ex-offenders. Not only faced with traditional discrimination as a result of systemic and institutional racism, a sad reality is that today, a large percentage of discrimination comes from within the Black Community. The process, the steps to securing meaningful employment, is the same for ex-offenders as it is for non-offenders. What makes this process even more difficult for ex-offenders is the question on most employment applications that asks whether you have been ever been convicted of a crime in the past. The social and economic impact of this question carries devastating consequences, that has and continues to leave black and brown children living in extreme poverty, with very limited access to resources to realize their full potential. Research has shown this especially the case in Southern states. Recently, several states have adopted policy that eliminates employers from asking whether potential employees have ever been convicted of a crime before which in effect levels the playing field so -to- speak for ex-offenders to become productive contributors to society upon their release from prison.
