Exactly 40 years ago I got the idea into my head that it would be great to walk across the US completely oblivious to the existence of any hiking trails in the States. In 1975 I flew over but never realized that dream although I did do some hiking on what, unbeknownst to me at the time, turned out to be the Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania. Jump forward to today and I just finished a book by a guy who walked the American Discovery Trail which has reawakened my dormant interest for a hike of this magnitude sometime in the future. Having also read online journals by people who have done, or are at present doing, the ADT I’ve learned that one piece of gear they have in common for the long road walks is a stroller, wagon or cart of some kind. That seems to be an excellent idea and, since my upcoming 500-600 km walk from Gdańsk in Poland to Treblinka or the Sobibór extermination camp (distance depending on time) on the first stage of my hike through eastern Poland is 100% road walking, I’ve ordered a Dixon Rollerpack from the States. Unfortunately it cannot morph into a young Megan Fox but, like a Transformer, it can be turned into an external frame backpack by attaching the frame to the harness vertically. This would be extremely practical for travelling on the ferries, buses and trains at the beginning and end of the hike. I should be getting it at the end of this month. dixonrollerpack/
