Exactly one year ago today, little over an hour ago, we as a rescue experienced our first (and one of the most tragic) loss. We had been at the Huntington Cabell Wayne Animal Shelter bathing dogs all day and taking pictures to try to get as many animals as possible adopted before the first of the year. We had been notified that the shelter would be euthanizing multiple dogs if we did not get a large amount adopted or into rescue. That day, I ran a dog to the vet, and when I came back there were two boxer mix looking pups in the front of the shelter. There had been parvo so bad at the shelter recently and we were terrified that they would get sick if they went to the back of the shelter. I asked one of the shelter workers where they came from and she said that there were three pups brought in that someone said was freezing on the side of the road. She explained that the third puppy had already died (this was around 1:30pm). We were at the shelter all day and planned to take the two remaining pups with us when we left. Around 7pm I went to the back to find a dog that someone was asking about when I heard faint whimpering coming from a tiny crate on the cold hard concrete floor. No bedding in the crate, and the third poor puppy...still alive but fading fast. I picked up the crate, asked the worker if we could take the pup, and off to the vet we went to try to save his life. They did not try to save him, they just left him to die and told no one. We named him Comet, because left our world just as quickly as he came into it. We posted to please pray for this little one (and most of you that know me know that I dont do that often) because he would be fighting for his life. Sadly, Comet died in my arms shortly after reaching the vet. We have no idea what was wrong with him, as it could have been a hundred different things. One thing that we know for sure, is that he did NOT deserve to be left in a cold dark hallway by himself to die alone for several hours. If we would have known that he was still alive, we would have rushed him to the vet much earlier that day. I absolutely broke down that night...and still to this day it absolutely breaks my heart that he was alone as long as he was. He now has a forever place at Camp PPR and a beautiful little urn with his photo. This is one of the reasons that we are so passionate about trying to turn the shelter around. This did happen while the shelter was under a different director (so this is not on the current administrations hands), but regardless...it never should have happened. Animals should never have to suffer like that. Comet is one of the reasons that we take in tough cases, and one of the reasons that we cremate and get an urn for each animal that we cannot save that comes through PPR. So, send Comet some kisses and sweet thoughts tonight where ever he is tonight. And please keep the animals at the shelter in your thoughts. We need things to change...and we need for this to never happen again.
